This airport is built on an artificial island off the coast of Kitakyushu and was opened in 2006. It operates domestic flights and some international charter flights.

The airport is accessed by a 2km toll bridge from the Higashikyushu Expressway.

Schedule flights operate to Tokyo (StarFly and Japan Airlines), Naha (Skymark Airlines) and one international flight runs to Seoul with Jeju Air.
